What did teaching teach you?
I started teaching because I was in kind of a financial hurry. Teaching was the only available (and best paying) job at the time. I never really thought of myself as a patient person and I never pictured myself in a classroom. All those things were proven wrong as soon as I started. Teaching taught ...

Re: How to manage parent's complaints?
I have and it really is very strsssful. It seems that It is always the teacher's fault if the students misbehave or get bad grades. Though the teacher plays a significant role, ultimately it is up to the student to pay attention to class and study at home. I have always tried to tell that to the par...

Re: Tackling beliefs
Unless someone's really interested in your beliefs, I don't see the point in explaining to them anything. Sometimes people just want to pick on you. They're not really interested in listening to you, they just want you to lose patience and get angry with them, or just humor them. Don't try to explai...

What's the youngest group of students you've taught?
My youngest group was around 8/9 years old and they were great (my patience was tried to the limit but it still was good). My oldest was 65/70 years old and they also were amazing. This proves that you're never too young (or old) to learn a language. I never had any issue with them and they learned ...

Re: What do you think it's the hardest thing about moving to another country?
Being from a country where families used to be close, leaving my family is the hardest part of going overseas. I miss them so much when I am away. Second, the adjustment in my new place. It will surely be difficult to adjust especially everything is new. New home, new work, new culture, and possibl...

Class brat (and their parents)
I think we've all had that student who thinks he/she is the best just because they have money/power (even when they're not the brightest or smartest). They do the minimum effort in class and misbehave and then get mad when they fail the class. When you want to deal with it with their parents, you fi...

Re: Teacher's Pet
Having a favorite can't be helped. We form a connection with all our students but with some of them, the connection is stronger. That doesn't mean that those students will get special treatment or anything. It just means that you're special to someone young and they kind of look up to you. We all ha...

Homework
In my early days as a teacher, I used to be that annoying teacher who left homework in absolutely every class. Students would get mad at me for it and that later on led the class to rebel against me (which made the teaching-learning process extremely difficult). I now try to have a healthy balance a...

Re: Discrimination Against the Disabled, Overweight, and Non-Caucasians
It's important to remember that most Arian cultures are highly superficial and very dependant on looks and how people see you. It is only logical that they'll judge other cultures as much as they judge themselves. I wish I could tell you some kind of magic advice or anything but I don't really know....

Re: Preference for Canadian Teachers
This happens all around the world. For instance, Spanish academies in Japan prefer to hire Spanish teachers instead of South American ones (and they don't really care about the accent or anything). In Europe, they prefer British teachers instead of Americans, and so on. I guess it has something to d...
