Re: Teacher's Pet

Are you a teacher who currently has a student considered as a teacher's pet? Or have you ever been one or known one? When I was a student, I kind of hated teacher's pets. I used to think that they were being nice and helpful to teachers just because they wanted to gave good grades. But now that I'm ...

Re: Homework

Homework is good for the college and high school level but is counterproductive for lower grades. Anyway, if lower-level schools do feel extra work needs to be done, then they can always make a study period within school hours. Why would giving homework for grade level students be counter productiv...

Re: How far is your workplace(school) from your home?

I'm actually just a 5 minute drive away from the university that I work for. I'm renting a place that's near. It's nice to be near your workplace because it's pretty convenient. You don't need to wake up very early in the morning. You don't need to spend long hours driving or riding the bus. If you ...

Re: The Hiring of the Unqualified

When you say hiring of unqualified, are you referring to teachers who don't have masters degrees? Is that a requirement in South Korean schools? In the university where I'm teaching, masters degree is preferred but not initially required. Instructors without any masters degrees are given 3 years to ...

Re: What apps would you recommend for exploring a new location?

You'll need 3 vital apps when traveling to a new location: 1. Google Maps - this is the best way to find your way through a foreign place. You can even find restaurants, hotels, gas stations, coffee shops, and others that are near your location. To be sure that you can find your way even without int...

Re: How do you deal with talkative students?

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions! I didn't expect so many replies in such a short time frame. The more they are engaged on things that keeps them busy, it may lessen their talking skills. But that's not really the case after all. This is a nice technique and I may probably incorporate it...

Re: Thai Meals and total cost per day?

Haven't gone to Thailand yet, but the University that I'm currently teaching at is planning a team building activity there specifically, in Phuket. I'm kind of excited because I've heard that the street food is great! I've watched some videos on YouTube about people eating Thai street foods and my m...

How do you deal with talkative students?

I'm a college professor. I deal with all kinds of students every single day. There are students who love to listen to what I'm saying. There are those who don't care and just stare at an empty space in the room. There are some who fall asleep whenever they hear my voice. There are some who love to e...

Re: Is Knowing Local Language necessary?

I've had some experience teaching in a foreign country for one semester. It was a bit hard at first, not knowing their local language/dialect. But if you have a good grasp of the English language, you'll be fine for a bit. You should be able to express yourself well in English in order to be success...
