How to find good, lower cost hotels?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice about navigating the more affordable hotels in Thailand. Are there any Thai chain hotels that are notable? Any that I should avoid? What is the lowest amount of money I can spend on a hotel and still expect to have the place be clean and functional? Thanks in advance!
